TAFE Outreach programs are closely aligned to the Federal Social Inclusion Agenda ensuring NSW education is accessible to people who face barriers to learning including geographical and social isolation, language and cultural factors, financial hardship, lack of educational confidence, being unaware of opportunities to learn, a disability or family commitments.

Program

The program was designed in consultation with stakeholders. A steering committee was formed representing the community partners collaborating on the program. The program ran for 17 weeks as an Outreach class where participants developed language, literacy, employability and communication skills. They became part of a learning community extending their network and gaining confidence in an educational environment.
A crucial aspect of the program was work experience. Work experience can be difficult to organise but consistently achieves excellent outcomes for students. 30 hours of work placement was built in to the program.
Centrelink contacted local farmers and nurseries in the Liverpool and Campbelltown region to see if they would collaborate with the programs by taking the refugee students for work experience placements. The steering committee also went on a few trips to search for work placement opportunities. TAFE Outreach did the risk assessments on each work placement location before students undertook their work experience.
The program also included a field trip.
