TAFE Outreach programs are closely aligned to the Federal Social Inclusion Agenda ensuring NSW education is accessible to people who face barriers to learning including geographical and social isolation, language and cultural factors, financial hardship, lack of educational confidence, being unaware of opportunities to learn, a disability or family commitments.

Participants

Students enrolled in the first group came from a range of backgrounds, Karen (Burma), Sierra Leoneans and Burundians (Africa), Filipino and Colombians.

Most of the participants came from war torn countries and had poor literacy, numeracy and language skills. Interrupted or no formal education was the norm with in the group.

The Burundian literary tradition is passed down to younger generations in spoken poetry, fables, legends, riddles, and proverbs. There are epic poems about peasants, kings, ancestors, and cattle. Oral stories may be told through "whispered singing."
